Timmerman Gift Kicks off Capital Campaign

Longtime Door County Y supporters Barb and Glenn Timmerman recently announced a generous $1 million lead gift for the ongoing capital campaign.

Sturgeon Bay, WI –  The Door County YMCA is excited to announce a generous gift of $1 million from the Glenn and Barb Timmerman Family to establish a new Wellness Center as part of the expansion of the Sturgeon Bay facility ensuring the Y is able to meet the needs of today’s adults and families while planning for the future. 


Glenn and Barb Timmerman are seasonal residents of Door County. They, along with their son Nate, who lives in New York and spent summers growing up in Door County, believe in the vision and the future of the Door County Y. 


Glenn served on the Door County Y board in a governance role and actively participated in the development of the Y’s strategic plan, which laid out a vision and road map for the future of the Y and how it serves the Door County Community.  Through this process, Glenn states, “I became very engaged in the programs that the Y offers and was able to see firsthand the life altering impact the Y has on the people and families in the Door County community.” 


“We wanted to engage with an organization that greatly impacts the community, and we feel that the Y truly serves people regardless of age, ability, and economic background”, says Barb. 


“With the Timmerman Family investment in the well-being of the community  and the potential of its youth, the benefits will be felt for generations,” says Heidi Erickson, CEO of the Door County YMCA. 
A renovation and expanded Y will allow us to: 

  • Provide a welcoming and supportive environment where residents from all ages and backgrounds can come together in pursuit of health, wellness and belonging. 
  • Increase accessibility for older adults and those with mobility challenges.
  • Create more social gathering spaces to foster community connections.
  • Deepen our partnership with other local organizations, offering more programs for seniors and those seeking a healthier lifestyle.
  • Create opportunities for education and small group meetings in a multi-purpose space.
  • Ensure we are responding to and meeting the needs of today’s adults and families, while planning for the future. 


“Our interest in the Door County Y has turned from personal engagement to personal giving, says Glenn. “We wanted to make a difference in a community that we love. We believe the renovations to the Sturgeon Bay Y are long overdue and will position the Y to thrive for years to come!”
